Closet Declutter & Organization

Hey guys! I started this week doing my New Year house declutter project! I want to bring my home back to a simple feel & make sure everything we own is intentional. I feel like over this crazy year -- COVID pandemic, online schooling for the boys, daily life, and trying to spend more quality time together has allowed our house to get a little out of hand. I've enjoyed the quality time we've gotten to spend together, and letting the stress of a "perfect" home subside, but it's time to declutter our space AND our minds!!

In today's video, I'm sharing some decluttering tips that I DIDN'T share in the video on my YouTube Channel! I wanted to share some decluttering tips for those tough spots in our home -- like closets!!

Something to keep in mind as you declutter...

Everything in your home either benefits you

-OR-

it doesn‘t!

If it doesn’t benefit you, it COSTS you.

What’s the cost?

-EITHER-

the time & effort to manage it

-OR-

the space to store it!

Clean up your space first... it can get a bit messy, so starting with a clean space will help you feel less overwhelmed & also help you see problem areas.

Declutter section by section, NOT all at once! This will really help you not get too overwhelmed & leave the project all together.

Place items to declutter in a laundry basket/box & take them out to the car to donate right away. That way they don’t get brought back out, and it makes the process much smoother! - tips for donating right now during this crazy year... some of the thrift stores are very overloaded and have limited time to accept donations. We have called ahead to find out when they open the doors for donations, and do our best to try to get there early on so we can have the chance to donate our items.

These tips can be applied to anyone! The best part is you can use these tips while decluttering any space, and if you are decluttering with someone or by yourself!

  • CLOSET :: Turn your hangers all one direction & as you wear them, turn the hanger the opposite way! At the end of a few months, check which clothes are still not turned over in the hanger, and donate them! If you're not wearing them in a few month's time, you can probably do without it!

  • LINEN CLOSET // LAUNDRY ROOM :: Clean out your linens by making sure you have only 2 towels per person in your household! This will help make sure you always have extra towels ready for guests & you will likely have enough before it's time to do laundry again! Also, pre-sorting your laundry will help it from piling up on top of you.

  • TOYS :: Give your kids' toys a HOME! The problem may not be that your child has too many toys, but it's that they don't have a place to go. Having designated bins for your kiddo's toys will help them learn HOW & WHERE to put them away. This will make it easy to see what they have & what they don't play with. Anything that isn’t a favorite & doesn’t have a home... may be worth donating (or sell, & get a little cash in your pocket for the holidays!) --- something I have done in the past, is let my boys decide if they want to sell any toys to a consignment store & if so, I let them keep the money earned from those toys. Otherwise we talk about donating them to other kids who might not have any toys.

  • PANTRY :: Organizing your items by theme: baking, spices, pastas, etc. and placing them into bins helps the space seem cohesive and purposeful. Labelled bins also give each item a HOME, which makes cleaning, organizing, and decluttering easier every time!!

  • SURFACES :: Sometimes there is just simply too much on our surfaces! Take out those decor items that don't bring happiness and actually cause more stress. Decide if it has purpose in that space!

If you're needing more decluttering motivation, head over to my YouTube decluttering series! I hope these tips help you! I know every time I declutter a space, my mind feels so much clearer!
