Hey guys! Over the last few weeks on my YouTube Channel, we shared our THREE Boys Room Makeovers! After OVER 1 year of living in Arizona, we finalized the boys' room makeover plans and brought you along with us for the makeovers! {tap the videos below to see watch the full makeover videos!}
While sticking to the boys' interests, we did these makeovers, while staying on a small budget. I wanted to share some low-budget decorating tips with you!
I also wanted to be sure to style their rooms in a way that would grow with them easily... for example, our youngest, Noah, won't always be into Star Wars... but his bedroom can easily be shifted into a different theme, because the "shell" of his room was left pretty neutral.
Before starting I makeover, I always ask:
What are the problems in this space?
What are the functions you want to accomplish in this room?
Once I have these questions answered, I'm able to really focus in on what changes need to be made in the room. Let's get started!
M A K E O V E R O N A B U D G E T T I P S
S H O P Y O U R H O M E
This is important to do FIRST! Be creative when "shopping". Save money by making things your own! Shop your home, thrift stores, or sales for baskets, bins or anything you need! Organization tools like baskets, bins, or lazy Susans, double as function & decor elements. Being creative with your storage (adding a cube organizer, baskets, shelving, etc.) will make your space look unique, clean, organized & all done on a low budget!
I can't tell you how many things over the years I have either painted -or- spray painted from something I've thrifted, or already owned! A can of spray paint can completely transform almost anything & not only give it new life, but completely change the style of the item!
2. T H R O W P I L L O W C O V E R S
Buy inserts once, & buy covers to change the style, color, or mood of the room, on a budget! This can be an easy way to switch out your decor when needed, without needing to purchase or store so many pillows! I tend to get most of my throw pillow inserts + covers from Amazon, and have saved the ones I love in my Amazon Favorites! As the boys grow up and their interests may change, throw pillow covers are easy to switch out!
3. T H R I F T & D I S C O U N T S T O R E S
Stores like Ross, TJMaxx, Marshalls, etc. sell unique pieces which are highly discounted! If you've been following my Room Makeover Series on my YouTube channel for a while, you know lots of my favorite decor items are from these stores!
4. L E S S I S M O R E
You don't always have to "add more" to decorate a space. Sometimes removing things from a room or space can make a HUGE difference! Too many items can overwhelm a space, and sometimes having less can help you focus on things you love more. So often I find that less IS more & can have just as big of an impact!

C L E A N U P & D E C L U T T E R
Doing a quick pick-up gives you a clean slate & a fresh mind to start your makeover!
S T A R T S M A L L
Focus on one section at a time. A large area can be so overwhelming if you're trying to take it on all at once!
T A K E Y O U R T I M E
Don't feel rushed to make the space look great. Make sure you find things you LOVE and are INSPIRED by!
B E F L E X I B L E
Sometimes what we envision just doesn't turn out! Having an open mind & looking at several options will help you find the best set up for you!
I usually always have a plan for my room makeovers, but not everything goes as planned! It's important to remember to be flexible and allow changes in your ideas. Things don't always turn out... & that's okay! Giving yourself grace & trying many different arrangements will help you find the best functionality for the room!
I hope these tips inspire you to start on that space you've always wanted to refresh. And keep in mind, It doesn't need to be a huge expense!
